Dressing your age How to look gorgeous over 40

Sue loves her Mom jeans; the elastic band sits comfortably below her slightly bulging belly and the leg conveniently tapers to her ankles. Well the truth of the matter is the Mom jean flatters Sue about as well as a big brown potato sack does.

Women over the age of 50 tend to get quickly frustrated when it comes to finding something perfect to wear. Baby boomers can get lost in a sea of rules, fashion trends and age-appropriate concerns. Dressing after a certain age can be quite challenging.

There’s been a subtle shifting from ultra-casual workplace clothes, but mature women still enjoy comfortable rather than fussy dressing. Experts suggest building your basic wardrobe around quality pieces reflecting personal taste, and adding tops, accessories or jewelry that are unstructured, chunky and informal. That way you look your best and feel confident in any situation, but you make a personality statement. Also you should base your choices on the people you deal with - who do you face day-to-day? Even while using personal flair, you want to make choices that suit your environment.

Fit and quality of clothes
A great fit is the most important thing! Look for high-quality clothing; you will get better fabrics and better cuts, which make a better fit.

Look for softer, neutral colors
Softer neutrals — navy, charcoal, black and khaki — are better for day outfits. But don’t go overboard, there’s nothing more depressing than looking into a closet filled with just blacks, dark blues and grays. You must be careful with having to much black against your face, it can look a little harsh. No wardrobe is complete without bright colors: Stay away from primary colors; instead go with jewel tones. Remember that black and white should be saved for evening.

Big and bold accessories:
When it comes to accessories, a bigger, bolder piece is better then lots of small items of sentimental jewelry. One strong piece is a very chic statement and very age appropriate.

Office fashion: Wrap dresses are great, but women with larger chests can have problems with the fit. Some are so low-cut that you can cross the line from sexy to slutty. To keep from looking inappropriate, wear a sexy camisole underneath your dress. You can be sexy and draw attention to your cleavage without showing everything! Also, when wearing a dress, the right bra is critical. Make sure you get fitted for your right-size bra! When purchasing the right suit, color and fit are everything. Instead of bright-colored suits, wear neutral tones. You will get more use out of a neutral color, and it won’t look age specific. To add some color, wear a jewel-toned shirt under the suit!

It can be difficult to find the perfect casual outfit for a female baby boomer. You want clothes that fit well and are age appropriate. Remember, when putting a look together, that you do not need to follow your mother’s rules. You do not need to match perfectly! Think outside the box and be adventurous. The fact that a lot of marketing and new trends are geared towards the 20-somethings makes it more challenging for the boomer to shop. For inspiration you can look at TV shows like “Desperate Housewives, and Lipstick Jungle”, where women above their 40s dress to impress and make no apologies for it.
How to Criticize Your Boss

Q: How can you tell your senior manager that they use a catch phrase too much in conversation? Phrases like "well obviously," "you know," and, my personal favorite, "to be honest" can cause them to disengage with their audience and diminish their effectiveness as speakers.

A: Your concerns are well justified, but you'll want to put a lot of thought into how you approach your manager on this topic. Just as important as what you say to him or her is how you say it. Depending on the relationship you have with your boss as well as the tone you use, it could work to bring you closer or end up causing a rift, say experts.

"Any time you are offering unsolicited advice, you run the risk of alienating versus helping," explains Jodie Charlop, founder of Atlanta-based career coaching firm Potential Matters. "It adds to the complexity if there is a power differential."

Timing also matters, says Tracey Trottenberg, a Los Angeles-based leadership trainer, coach, and speaker. "Catch them in a moment when they're more receptive and not racing around or short on time," she recommends. Still, the conversation doesn't have to be long or drawn out, she says. "It can be delivered simply and to the point."

In addition to your tone and timing, you'll also want to consider your motivation. "If you are coming from a place of truly wanting to help [your] manager, then you'll have a higher probability of finding the right words and approach," says Ms. Charlop. But if you're bringing this up with your manager because the habit is driving you nuts, don't let your emotions push you to be too blunt.
It is quite common for people to feel like they need to correct or "fix" others, she says. Often, people justify their actions with the idea that they are helping the person in question. "But the fact is we are judging by our own personal standards," says Ms. Charlop.

When you're ready to bring it up, find a safe setting and ask permission to talk about something that you've observed in your informal conversations. "Share how it is impacting you," says Ms. Charlop. For example, you could say something along the lines of: "Bob, I value your expertise. I've observed in our conversations that you use the catch phrase 'you know' many times in our conversation -- so much, I find it hinders my ability to really hear you." Then, follow it up with a positive. "It's important to me that we have great communication."
Rather than singling out your manager, try to make him or her a part of a larger class or group, suggests crisis management expert Davia Temin.

Years ago, when Ms. Temin worked as a marketing director for a major investment bank, she was asked by the bank's president to help fix some of the senior managers' poor table manners. Rather than approach the managers directly, Ms. Temin says she hired two men to coach them as a group on communication skills. By Ms. Temin's design, the first meeting was held over breakfast in the corporate dining room and the bankers were handed copies of "Tiffany's Table Manners for Teenagers." Then, the consultants talked about the importance of table manners, she recalls. "I orchestrated it all, and the message got through."

Don’t Steal Computer From People Who Know How To Use Computers – Part Deux
Back in March we brought you the story of Mark Bao, the serial entrepreneur who tracked his laptop thief and released humiliating videos of the culprit doing the rubber band dance on Youtube.
Last night a live drama played out on Twitter, as Sean Power, a tech author and consultant, used the free software program, Prey, to track his stolen laptop, which had disappeared,  along with a birth certificate, health card, cell phone and cash, from a New York City bar while he was in town on business

Despite checking every bar he'd been at, he couldn't find the laptop bag. They all insisted nobody had seen it, he says.
From back home in Canada, Power remembered he had the software, and two days later says he watched remotely as the "thief" took a photo and uploaded it to Flickr.
That helped Power figure out his name and location: Oficina Latina, on Prince St., in Nolita. It was one of the bars he'd visited.
Twitter followers watching Powers tweet about the drama soon figured out the culprit was actually a part-owner in the establishment.

Power says he tried to sic the NYPD on the owner, who identified himself to the press as Paolo Voltano, but he says they refused to respond without his filing an official report — which he couldn't do from Ontario. Several online watchers offered to help, but Power begged them not to.
"Please please please don't get directly involved. I don't want any of you to get hurt for a stupid laptop."

Reached for comment, Voltano insists the misplacement was a communication error among the bar staff. "When he called we didn't know the bag had a laptop in it," he said. "It wasn't a laptop bag, it was a big bag, like one you have a lot of stuff inside."
"It was a mis-communication. We didn't know we had it, and until someone comes to claim it, we don't know."
He began using the computer for personal purposes, he said, only after the bag had been there "a week and nobody claimed it. I thought it was karma," he said, mentioning his own computer and cell phone had been stolen three weeks before at the restaurant.
In the meantime, a Twitter follower was staking out the bar, and the story had broken on several blogs, although Voltano was still blissfully unaware.

Everyone wants a big bench press. It's the ultimate sign of machismo and a true test for wannabe NFL players at the Combine. But it seems the more often you bench, the worse you feel. You get discouraged and either stop benching altogether or just try to bench more, which eventually leads to an injury. Not good.
But many common problems with the bench press can be fixed with just a few simple changes in your workout. In fact, to get better at benching, sometimes it is better not to bench at all, at least for a short time. Give yourself a break and start over. Take a few steps back and work on the basics. If you know some of the major myths about how you approach your bench press training workouts, you'll be stronger, healthier and remain injury-free for a long time.

Myth: The bench press is just a chest exercise
Most lifters don't realize the bench press is a full body lift: You need a tight grip on the bar, a braced core and hips that drive the feet downward. Also, the strength of your triceps, lats and shoulders plays a big role in your ability to press more weights. Another big technique flaw lies in the elbows. If someone looked straight down on you while you're bench pressing and sees your elbows flared out, you are putting too much stress on your shoulders. This can cause some serious shoulder issues. The elbows should track about 45 degrees out from your torso during the lift.
Myth: The bench press is built on the bench
Once people start bench pressing in the gym, they forget about doing push-ups. Unlike bench pressing with a rigid barbell and your back fixed on the bench, push-ups are a more natural movement. Push-ups also promote strength and mobility of the upper back and the shoulder blades. They also are an amazing core exercise, as when you are doing push-ups, you are in a plank position. If you do push-ups properly, you'll be amazed at how your posture changes and how your bench press increases. Don't forget push-ups can be overloaded with a partner providing manual resistance or holding an Olympic plate on your upper back.
Myth: Bench press starts when you grab the bar
When most lifters come into the gym after a long day at the office, their idea of a warm-up is a few sets benching an empty bar. Sorry. A thorough warm-up is essential, and your entire upper-body should be used in the process. I know what you’re saying: "I don't have enough time!" But warming up isn't an option; it's mandatory. And a good warm-up can take as little as 10-15 minutes, if you move progressively through each exercise.

How to fit a quick and easy workout into your day

Addicted to Exercise? How to Tell When Healthy Habits go too Far
Anyone who’s felt the full-body buzz and calm mind that comes after a real soaker of a workout knows that the feeling is comparable to a great glass of wine in the way it will keep you coming back time and again. And research bears it out—exercise has an undeniable effect on feel-good hormones. In other words, those happy feeling are real, and some would even propose that those feelings are as addictive as a drug like heroin.
As a distance runner and professional advocate of the feel-good power of exercise, I consciously avoid using the word “addiction” to describe most people’s relationship with exercise and combat it whenever the word is thrown around casually.
A person with a healthy but passionate relationship with exercise might make sacrifices of time, money, sweat, sleep, tears… and even the occasional bloodletting… that others find hard to understand, but that are firmly on the spectrum of “normal” and “healthy.”

Here are 3 exercises from Halzack that might make you look like you've grown an inch or two:

1. Downward Dog

Downward Dog is a great yoga exercise that both strengthens and lengthens. To achieve the position correctly, straighten the legs to your personal limit, send your tailbone to the ceiling and pull the lats down (via the shoulder blades). Do a deep inhale, then exhale. Repeat the breath 8 times and relax. Resume the posture at least 2 more times without letting your head drop or your back arch. Keep your head on your spine, making your spine one long line.

2. Getting Your Back on Track

This one is more of a stretch. Interlace your fingers behind your neck and slowly roll down as if you're pulling your head down to your toes, taking it as far as you can go. Hang there for 4-5 breaths. Take your middle finger and pointer on each hand and wrap them around your big toe to pull yourself closer to your toes -- this is a great hamstring stretch. Once you get to the bottom of that stretch, pull your back toward the ceiling as you pull your head to the floor. This is an amazing stretch in the sacrum and lower spine. Use your abs to push the lower spine toward the ceiling, and repeat up to 3 times.

3. No Time Spine Align

Take a 2.5 lb weight or a very heavy book and balance it on the crown of your head. Think of the weight pushing down into the top of your skull. Keep the energy in your neck going up, letting the neck get as long as possible -- hold it for about a minute. You feel like you get a little taller standing there in this meditative state. Let your shoulders drop and concentrate on your breath. Hold for at least minute. You'll be left with a sense of height and length in the neck and spine.

The level of hormones in the body determines the condition of hair, skin and body. Moreover, even has an impact on our confidence in ourselves. In a few days of the cycle we seem currently unattractive and try not to agree to date. Down with hormonal slavery! Offer you the weekly plan, checking with whom you can be perfect every day.

First week: Time of the ICP
WHAT'S HAPPENING: These days you hardly force myself to move away from the refrigerator, and evenings on the couch - nowhere else does not like. Everything else on the face appear pimples and hair quickly become dirty. Blame It on the hormone progesterone, which comes into play just six days prior to menstruation. He is responsible for enhanced release of sebum, hence the sad state of the face and hair. Almost every girl is unhappy with their appearance in this period.
YOUR PLAN
Cheat hormones. Erated care of your skin for a week before the expected menstruation. Even if a couple of pimples, do not worry! Twice a day - morning and evening - wipe the skin by means of acne, which include salicylic acid, which destroys bacteria and dissolves grease. And in order to prevent rapid contamination of the hair, use this time cleansing shampoo for frequent washing.

Masks. Best salvage tool at this stage - a pair of "tone + corrector". Foundation will help align the complexion, and proofreader cope with disguise problem areas. The result can be secured with crumbly powder. Corrector and the tone is better to apply with a brush, which should be regularly disinfected. And try once again face with her hands do not touch.
Moisturize.

Some girls are committing an unforgivable error - stop using cream, thinking that once the skin and so fat, the extra moisture can aggravate her condition. In fact, during the ICP level of stress for the organism is highest. The skin lacks the fluid, and energy. Replace your usual day cream to the one that is designed for oily skin. Or at least before bedtime be clearly enriched moisturizing cream.
SECOND WEEK: Critical days
WHAT'S HAPPENING: The situation is improving, progesterone allocated less and less. But coming to the fore two issues - unpleasant traces of pimples on the face and body odor.
YOUR PLAN
Atonement. It's time for delicate peeling: getting rid of all the excess, the skin becomes smoother, and its color - brighter. After the procedure, please use the toner with salicylic acid - it dry problem areas. Before going out on the street necessarily Apply a barrier cream with an SPF of at least 15.
Flavored. It is very unpleasant to realize, but during the month of the female body odor. Hygiene - primarily, but still use a cream or powder for the body with their favorite flavors. Take note: fruity-floral scents is very sensual, musky are strong aphrodisiacs, and vanilla unusually resistant.
THIRD WEEK: Ovulation

What happens: Due to estrogen level reaches its highest level over the cycle, your libido is at its peak, and you can experience the most vivid sense of closeness with loved ones. If you're lonely, it's time to win the men's hearts! You can easily seduce any embattled handsome. You are literally a magnet for men: hair shine, skin glows, her eyes burn - in general, all as a fairy tale.
YOUR PLAN
Get ready for uninterrupted string of dates! Men without taking your eyes, and you perfectly understand why. Now you're the queen, not only externally but also the feelings. During ovulation, we feel confident, so ready to engage in spontaneous behavior and more willing to spend money for pleasure. Making of a spa weekend or go to favorite cosmetic store in search of a new lipstick.
Looker. Scientists have found that during the third week of the cycle, women unconsciously start to dress more sexy, the preference for short and tight clothes. The best addition to the mini will be a shimmering body lotion.

FOURTH WEEK: Postovulyatsiya
WHAT'S HAPPENING: Well, that period superprivlekatelnosti not infinite, otherwise you would have quickly tired of crowds of gentlemen and their courtship. Now we come to play the hormones testosterone and progesterone, check the fluid in the body. Their level is still low, and it's time to start the battle with the impending symptoms of PMS.
YOUR PLAN
Fight with the discomfort (question of digestion). Unfortunately, bloating and feeling of heaviness can not be avoided. Think about proper nutrition, drink water and green tea. Switch to steamed vegetables and low-fat protein. Herbal teas can help bring the excess fluid from the body.
Take care of the person. Use the tools to face anti-acne, they contain antibacterial ingredients and ingredients that help prevent clogging of pores - then you need your skin right now.

9 body-language tricks to being attractive
Psst… want the inside scoop on how to suss out if someone has a crush on you, breed some feel-good vibes on a date, or even figure out whether that cute person sitting across from you is dying for a kiss? Believe it or not, the answers to all these questions and more can be found in the mysterious science of body language. Allan Pease, author of The Definitive Book of Body Language, has been studying the messages people send with their eyes, hands, posture, and more for years. Below, we’ve asked him to answer some of the most common questions that trip people up in the dating game. Trust us, this info will come in handy.

1. Appear confident on a date even if you’re nervous inside.
People who project confidence stand erect — shoulders up, chest out. Confident people also walk slightly more quickly than average, taking medium to long strides and swinging their arms slightly like they’re in a march. A subtler thing is not to blink very often. The average blinking rate is 8 to 16 blinks per minute. If you slow yours to four, you give the impression you’re cool and in control.

2. Show someone you’re interested.
With people we like and admire, we mirror their body behavior. If the date goes well, mirroring is something you’ll do naturally, but you can also intentionally mirror the other person’s gestures and posture. It may feel weird, but the other person will just think you’re getting along really well.
3. Recognize the signals that indicate someone is interested in you.
Look for preening signals. Preening is what animals do to make themselves more attractive. In humans, some basic examples would be arranging your clothes, touching your hair, or stroking your arm. These signs may seem obvious, but people miss them all the time in a dating situation, especially men.

4. Avoid signals that turn people off.
In studies, if a speaker crosses his or her arms, the audience recalls 40 percent less of what the person says and has a more negative attitude toward the individual speaking. They can’t even say why; they’ll just say they had a bad feeling. Also avoid any scratching or touching of the face. When you hide your face, we feel like we don’t know you, and we don’t think you’re telling the truth.

5. A woman should smile and maintain eye contact to catch a guy’s attention.
It goes back to the preening signals I talked about earlier. She might twirl her hair or touch her thigh. The thing I tell women is that you can’t be too obvious. Subtlety is lost on men. When a woman wants to pick up a guy sitting across the table, often she’ll lift up her eyes and gaze at him, then look away. Women think it’s an obvious sign, but men think she’s not interested because she looks away. On the other hand, if a woman holds a guy’s gaze and gives him a big, perky smile, then he gets it.

The year the Easter Bunny brought my kids organic, all-natural, yogurt-covered raisins didn’t go over very well—but at least my daughters are gung-ho for dying Easter eggs with homemade, plant-based dyes. We rummage and smoosh and boil, and they are amazed and delighted by the colors we create with a bunch of oddball ingredients from the kitchen. They love the messy magic, and my simmering neurosis about synthetic food dyes is quelled.

Certified food dyes approved by the FDA include colors synthesized from petroleum derivatives and even coal tar. While some food dyes based on natural ingredients come from things that, although natural, you still may not care to ingest: Have you heard about carminic acid? It is a commonly used red food coloring which comes from the dried, crushed bodies of pregnant female scale insects called cochineal. I have an adventurous palate, but that’s just not for me.
By using plant-based dyes for coloring Easter eggs, not only do you know exactly what you’re getting (no bugs, thanks), but the colors are far lovelier than their synthetic counterparts. They are muted yet vibrant, and knowing their source is gratifying on a deeper aesthetic level. Children seem to find that mashing food is also much more fun that simply dropping a tablet in a cup. As well, it is a great lesson in exploration—kids get to experiment with which plant materials work in which way, and can get creative with items in the refrigerator or pantry.
Some of these materials work best when they are boiled with the eggs (noted below), and some work well made ahead and used by dipping or soaking the eggs. If you are using juice, just use it straight. Bulky materials will be boiled with the eggs or boiled and allowed to cool for dipping. The longer you let the eggs soak, the more intense the color will be (for the boiled versions, you can remove them from the heat and allow to cool in the dye bath).

You can use your favorite egg-dying tricks here as well: Like crayons for a batik effect or rubber bands for a tie-dye effect. If you like a glossy egg, you can rub the dyed eggs with vegetable oil when they are dry.

How to Retire on $60,000 a Year

If you're a middle income family, you might be wondering how much money you're going to need to retire. Let's take a look at a 66-year-old couple that's been earning $60,000 a year and see what the numbers tell us.

Social Security
If you've been earning about $60,000 a year and want to retire at your full retirement age of 66, your current Social Security benefit would be about $1,500 a month, or $18,000 a year. Now if you're married, your spouse will basically collect at least half of this amount ($9,000), even if your spouse never worked. That means your estimated combined Social Security benefit at age 66 today would be about $27,000.
If you're getting $27,000 in Social Security benefits and want to retire on $60,000, you need to somehow make up the other $33,000. The only way to do that is to live off the returns on your retirement savings (unless you happen to have a pension, which most people don't).
So at age 66, how much money would you need to have saved to produce $33,000 a year in distributions and not run a big risk of depleting your savings?
Well, there's no precise answer to this question because financial market returns are so volatile. But from studying history, we can get a reasonable sense of what it will take.
A good estimate is that a portfolio can support inflation-adjusted distributions of between 4% and 5% per year, depending on market conditions. So if you're unlucky and retire during a bear market, you might be stuck at 4%. It you're a little more fortunate and financial returns are positive, then you could probably do 5%.
• The reality is that over your retirement years, you'll have good and bad market cycles. So sometimes you'll need to drop your distribution to 4% to get through a rough market, and sometimes you can bump it to 5% in better times.
That means to produce $33,000 of inflation-adjusted distributions, you would need somewhere between $660,000 and $825,000 in retirement savings.
• A 5% distribution on $660,000 gets you $33,000, and a 4% distribution on $825,000 gets you $33,000.
Now that might seem like a lot of money, but it's about right. And the main reason you need so much is because of inflation. If inflation runs at 3% for the next 25 years, your initial distribution would need to grow from $33,000 to about $66,000. Well, if you're taking out $66,000 a year, you can see that even a $660,000 portfolio probably won't last too long.

The shelf life of spices varies, and you never really need to worry about them going “bad” like other foods do. For example, a bottle of curry powder that’s been around a questionable amount of time probably won’t make you sick … it will just be less potent. Many folks abide by a “six-month rule” when it comes to discarding most spices. Seems a bit short to me. I certainly can’t afford to replace all of mine twice a year.

First comes chicken, then comes marriage? Be skeptical if you must, but this recipe may be charmed. It all began 26 years ago, when then-Glamour fashion editor Kim Bonnell gave the recipe to her assistant, Kathy Suder, who made the chicken for her boyfriend, who, a month later, asked her to marry him. “It’s a meal your wife would make. It got me thinking,” says Jon Suder, who now has three children with Kathy. Details of the simple dish passed from assistant to assistant like a culinary chain letter. When Bonnell heard that her recipe had inspired three weddings, she dubbed it Engagement Chicken. Now it is linked to 72 marriages.

First Person: How We Cut Our Monthly Spending by $500
When tough times hit the Hopkins family, they made drastic changes to their spending

Just like at millions of other households in America, the Great Recession hit my home like a runaway train. A few years ago, I sold a small business and took a job as the national credit manager for a franchised business. My better half was working for a marketing firm, and I still was a landlord for a few investment properties. We were living a good life, and then almost overnight we were both unemployed. I was selling off properties and barely making enough to cover the mortgages. Unable to land new jobs and drawing two unemployment checks, we decided that we had to cut costs before they dried up our savings. Our cost-cutting session started with a walk around the house. We found areas where we could cut costs. We trimmed about $500 per month by focusing on just five things.
