Top TV moms of 2011

With Mother's Day approaching, what better way to honor mothers than to dedicate an entire story to mothers whose children are, well, less than stellar. These children are special in their own way so having them under your tutelage takes a different type of mother - one that is patient and whose actions can be summed up by the behavior of their children.
Here are the Top TV Moms of 2011 - Whose Children Happen to be Dysfunctional.

5. Colleen Donaghy -- "30 Rock"
Elaine Stritch plays the mother of Jack Donaghy, a network executive whose main job is to oversee programs like "TGS with Tracy Jordan" and the show's slightly unbalanced stars. Jack's life is unstable and it's a wonder how he ever ended up in this high profile position. Elaine is brash and cruel and is everything Jack deserves.

4. Doris Sylvester -- "Glee"
The legendary Carol Burnett plays this mother perfectly to a daughter who is too successful for her own good. If you thought Sue Sylvester had problems, spend a few minutes with Doris. Sue is a loner who has issues with intimacy but wouldn't you if your mother abandoned you to hunt Nazis?

3. Lois Griffin -- "Family Guy"
Alex Borstein beautifully plays the loving wife of Peter Griffin. A mother to her three children, Meg, Chris, and Stewie, Lois is anything but typical for a TV mom. A known drug user with a meth addiction, Lois' other vices include gambling and stealing. Although these traits may be frowned upon, they are all but necessary with an insensitive husband in Peter and three children, one of which who is trying to kill her.

2. Marge Simpson -- "The Simpsons"
For more than 20 years, Julie Kavner has voiced one of the most respected TV moms in television history. Marge Simpson is the voice of reason in a family whose reason for living is slightly questionable. Homer is an idiot, Bart is a troublemaker, Lisa speaks out against topics that a normal child should have no interest in and Maggie hasn't spoken a word in 20 plus years. The Simpsons are the definition of dysfunctional and somehow Marge manages to keep things together. She probably hides her emotions in her bee hive hairdo.

1. Evelyn Harper -- "Two and a Half Men"
Evelyn Harper is not a great mother by any definition of mother. Played by the fantastic Holland Taylor, Evelyn has been known to sleep around and get drunk - a lot. Her boys are adults and Evelyn's behavior is bar none. However, with all of her bad doings, Evelyn gets credit for dealing with one of the biggest nut jobs in history - Charlie Sheen. If you were the mother, fictional or not, of the warlock Charlie Sheen, you would be drinking and sleeping around as well. The apple doesn't fall too far from the tree in this situation. If I have to hear, "winning" one more time, I'm going to have a drink too.

Food for finales and premieres

We are a nation that loves to be entertained, with a little something to munch on the side. Popcorn, mints and licorice pair nicely with movies. Hot dogs and cheesy nachos go hand-in-hand with baseball. Cold pizza works with just about everything, but especially YouTube.
And television?
With so many season premieres and finales ahead, we suggest foods that complement the personality, the content and the zeitgeist of a few popular TV shows.
So, we offer a few ideas on what to eat -- and recipes -- with nine shows.

American Idol

An annual favorite, "American Idol" already has people picking their winner for this season. The perfect food pairing?  plus a really cheesy potato casserole.

Glee
Carryout from your favorite Italian restaurant chain, heavy on the breadsticks. Or sloppy joes and potato chips. Or toss a slushies party.

Gossip Girl
Mad Men
Modern Family
NCIS
The Good Wife
30 Rock
True Blood
